Met Gala 2018: 15 Most Talking Points

The most prestigious fashion event took place on the 7th of May in the Big Apple and we’re literally drooling over the outfits of our favorite celebrities!

The Met Gala is an annual fashion exhibition and fundraising gala for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute in New York City. It was founded by publicist Eleanor Lambert and the benefit was first held in 1948 to endorse and promote donations from the high society. The most famous and also the not so famous personalities from the orbits of fashion, film, high-society, music and art come together to raise money for the Met's Costume Institute and celebrate the grand opening of its latest exhibition.

Last year, the theme of the event was Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between. This year's Met Gala, also called the Costume Institute Gala was a religious event as the theme of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's next Costume Institute exhibit is, "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” and has once again delivered show-stopping red carpet fashion. The exhibition borrowed 150 garments from multitude designers and the archives of the likes of Dolce & Gabbana, Balenciaga, Versace, Chanel and Dior - the top fashion houses, most of which historically have a close relationship with religion. Apart from this, forty Vatican robes and accessories were on display, including Pope Benedict XV's white silk cape and the pointed bishop's hat of Pope Leo XIII.

Celebrities donned the best of haute couture to uphold the theme of the august event and looked like pieces of art in a renaissance painting. In fact, it has also received an official mandate of approval from the Vatican. "We know it could be controversial for right wing or conservative Catholics and for liberal Catholics but it focuses on a shared hypothesis about what we call the Catholic imagination and the way it has engaged artists and designers and shaped their approach to creativity, as opposed to any kind of theology or sociology." told Andrew Bolton to the NYT.

The attendees looked absolutely resplendent and evangelical in their heavenly bodies inspired ensembles. Attendees included Hollywood A listers including our desi girls, Bollywood's sexiest exports to the land of Hollywood- Priyanka Chopra who has already made her mark in the Hollywood industry due to her hit show Quantico and Deepika Padukone who starred alongside Vin Diesel in 2017 film xXx: Return of Xander Cage.

All kudos go to the ineffable designers who’ve produced not just pieces of clothing but masterpieces showing how Catholicism has influenced fashion throughout the ages.

The annual guest list of the event includes only 650–700 people. As usual it started off with the cocktail hour. During the cocktail hour, guests arrived to walk on the red carpet, tour the year's special themed exhibition. The red carpet walks began at 7pm local time in New York which is 4.30am IST, followed by the formal dinner which entailed performances by the preeminent entertainers of the day. Attendees were treated to a surprise performance by Madonna who arrived in a black Gaultier gown with cut-out cross and a fishnet mantilla and opened her set with a fierce and apposite rendition of "Like A Prayer".

Most of the guests were successful in showing their best outfit that upholds the theme of the soiree; however there were a few guests whose ensembles were quite befuddling and didn't really make the cut.
