What exactly are Lip Fillers?

To help you achieve those desired plump lips, cosmetic surgeons perform a procedure where they inject dermal fillers to plump your lips. They’re called Hyaluronic Acid fillers and contain some other ingredients as well.

Are lip fillers safe?

It is a cosmetic treatment so there’s definitely is a chance that something might go wrong. But there are a number of precautions you can take.

First of all, research well about the professional you go to. Go for a consultation appointment and take their view on it, ask them as many questions as you like.

There are a number of spas that may provide this treatment, but it’s best to avoid that. They don’t have the same training and definitely cannot prescribe you a medication if anything goes wrong.

During the procedure, make sure you see that the products are removed from a box and the tools used are sterilized.

How long is the procedure?

It shouldn’t take more than an hour. The process includes cleansing and application of a numbing cream that takes about 20 mins to work.

The filler injection itself takes about 15-20 minutes, and another 15 for the numbing to wear off.

How long does the transformation take and how long does it last?

You can see the results immediately, while you’re getting injected actually.

In the first 24 hours you may witness some swelling but after that your lips will settle down.

Expect some light bruising and bleeding for up to 7 days post procedure. Usually, fillers can last from anywhere between 4-12 months depending on the kind of treatment and amount of solution you’re getting.

However, if you have a fast metabolism its likely to wear off quicker.

Do they hurt?

They aren’t as painful as you’d expect them to be. Especially since most doctors offer numbing prior to the procedure.

It can be a numbing cream or an injection depending on what you prefer. At most, the injection should feel like a hard pinch and the filler will sting as it’s getting injected.

Afterwards, the doctor will massage your lips and ask you to ice them for 10-15 minutes.

What if you don't like your lip fillers?

Well, the good news is that they aren’t permanent.

The filler substance is a natural substance that is broken down over time. But, in case you absolutely aren’t happy with the way they look, you can go back to the doctor and get a reversal.

This involves an injection that dissolves the filler within 5 minutes. But make sure you talk to your doctor about this possibility before you get your initial procedure. In the long term, once you stop getting fillers your lips will go back to how they used to be. And no, they won’t wrinkle or sag.

But it is possible that with multiple injections, even once you stop, your lips might be slightly bigger than you used to be.

What can you get done?

You can literally do anything you want.

Go for both the lips, just the bottom or top, just the center or sides, you can pump in as little or as much as you want.

You can talk to your doctor about anything that you want to change in particular or if you have certain inspirations but let the professional advise you on what will suit your face best.

Also keep in mind that it is possible that you may not get the exact look that you had in mind.

It is recommended to start small and increase the fillers gradually, so the transition is gradual.

What not to do?

There are a few things you must absolutely avoid if you plan to get the procedure done.

- Do not exercise on the day of your procedure, get a massage or facial or anything that increases blood circulation to your face.

- Avoid fish oil, Vitamin E and painkillers for about 10 days before the procedure as this might thin your blood thus causing bruising and bleeding.

What is the cost?

The costs obviously depend on the city you’re in, the doctor you go to and the amount of filler you want. But a rough approximate could be anywhere between Rs. 30,000-Rs. 60,000.

A number of celebrities have also opted for this procedure. Anushka Sharma is a recent addition to the list, she came under a lot of scrutiny for how the look turned out.
